A great work is that of the 14th-century painter Giotto di Bondone, the lamentation of Christ. Giotto laid the foundations of early Renaissance art as he adopted a more realistic style in his illustrations, thus escaping the context of Byzantine art. The Lamentation of Christ is a painful depiction as it reveals the tragedy of Christ's death.
In the center of the painting, we see the Virgin Mary, holding her dead Son, with an expression of intense pain. The feet of Christ are in the hands of Mary Magdalene, who with her humble posture and eyes full of sorrow, lovingly holds the feet of Jesus. The seated human figures with their backs turned, focus the viewer on the dramatic impact of the scene. The painter invites us to feel the emotional impact and the importance of the sacrifice of the Son of God. Other mourners surround Christ and share their grief as they raise their hands as a sign of despair and injustice. In the sky, we see 10 angels sad and troubled. However, apart from their sad face, the angels also show restless mobility, thus increasing the anxiety and complaint of the whole depiction. Bondone, with his naturalistic style, creates here a work that radiates the emotional charge as well as the seriousness of the sacrifice of the Son of God.
